| Ibizans are highly evolved hunting machines. The Ibizan is known as a three-way hunter, using sight,
smell and hearing equally in its pursuit of its quarry. The dogs use their large pointed ears to capture the faintest rustle and then put their noses to the ground and can track like a scent hound. |

They typically hunt in packs. Once they are released, the dogs spread out quickly and start searching. When one finds something, a sharp alarm bark is made and the pack comes running. They will then circle the area and begin to flush the rabbit by leaping and pouncing on the ground until the rabbit flees, then they give chase. The dogs retrieve the rabbits back to the hunter. The reward for bringing the catch to the hunter is a drink of water. |
While a retrieving instinct is there it is not as innate as in breeds such as a Labrador. Ibizans use many of the same techniques to rid the fields of smaller game such as birds, squirrels mice. My dogs
have a fascination to bugs such as termites. They will paw at a piece of wood with insects on/in it, watching
closely for movement. |
